In this section of the exam you need to write your own non fiction text. You could be asked to create a newspaper article, a magazine article, a letter, a leaflet, a speech, or an essay. These texts could be for any audience and for any purpose including persuasion, inform, explaining, or giving your opinion. You need to make sure you consider the Genre, Audience, Register, and Purpose of the task BEFORE you start writing.  

Practice Questions

  • Write a leaflet advising young people of how to deal with stress.

  • Write an article for a broadsheet newspaper in which you explain your opinion on how workers should be treated.

  • Write a magazine article for young people which informs them about the dangers of unhealthy eating.

  • ‘The criminal justice system is too gentle on young offenders.’ Write a persuasive speech where you give your views on this statement.

  • ‘Some people make a lot of fuss about handwriting; surely it’s what you write not how you write it that matters.’ Write an entry for your blog in which you explain your view on this statement.

  • ‘It has been said that nowadays, young people spend far too much time watching screens and far too little time reading books.’ Write a letter to a magazine of your choice in which you explain what you think about this statement.
