Language Paper 1 - Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing

Section B

Question 5 – Creative writing – 40 marks (24 content +16 SPAG)

  • Vary your sentence structures for effect

  • Use impressive vocabulary

  • Use a range of language techniques

  • Use correct and impressive punctuation – semi colons, colons, brackets etc.

  • Avoid COMMA SPLICING!

  • Use paragraphing and other structural techniques for impact.

  • Spend 45 minutes on this section.

Section A – 40 marks

Question 1 – 4 marks

  • List 4 things you learn about…..

  • This is a warm up question – spend no longer than 5 minutes on it!

  • Make sure you read the question carefully – what is it asking for information about?

  • Only list 4 things – no point in giving more!

  • You can quote or write in your own words

 

Question 2 – 8 marks

  • Analyse the LANGUAGE in the extract- similes, metaphors, verbs, adjectives, personification etc.

  • Read the question CAREFULLY! What is it asking you to do?

  • Read ACTIVELY – highlight important features as you read – what stands out to you? How does that link to the question?

  • Only look at the part of the extract you have been directed to – read CAREFULLY!

  • Aim to write 2 points minimum

  • Maximum 10 minutes

  • Remember to follow the PEACE structure!

 

Question 3 – 8 marks

  • Analyse the STRUCTURE in the extract- sentence structures, paragraphing, shifts in focus, narrative perspective, repetition.

  • Read the question CAREFULLY! What is it asking you to do?

  • Read ACTIVELY – highlight important features as you read – what stands out to you? How does that link to the question?

  • Aim to write 2 points minimum

  • Maximum 10 minutes

  • Remember to follow the PEACE structure!

 

Question 4 – 20 marks

  • Make sure you are writing in a critical style – the aim is to EVALUATE the text and how it achieves an effect on the reader.

  • Evaluate means to explain the successfulness of something.

  • Try to agree with the statement but it is not essential to do this.

  • You can analyse language and structure but avoid just copying what you have written beforehand.

  • Make sure you only look at the part of the text you are directed to by the question.

  • This is worth 20 marks (1/4 of the paper!) so spend at least 30 minutes on it!
